If you’ve ever opened your website analytics account and found a significant and surprising drop in search engine referral traffic, you know just how devastating a search engine penalty can be.

But don’t panic! Not all search engine penalties are permanent, and with a little detective work and remedial action, you should be able to restore your previous rankings and rebuild the flow of organic traffic to your site.

Here’s how to do it…

Step #1 – Check Google Webmaster Tools

Immediately after noticing a potential search engine penalty, the first thing you should do is check your Google Webmaster Tools account (assuming you have this service set up for your website). In many cases, when an automatic or manual penalty is issued to your website, it will be accompanied by a corresponding note posted in your Webmaster Tools account, detailing the specific rationale behind the penalty.

Interestingly enough, according to Barry Schwartz, writing for Search Engine Land:

“Google has sent over 700,000 messages to webmasters via Google Webmaster Tools in January and February 2012. That is more than the total number of messages Google sent in 2011 and almost more than what Google has sent since launching Google Webmaster Tools message center.”

While this is certainly a scary prospect for webmasters who fear receiving one of Google’s “Notices of Death,” it is somewhat reassuring to know that you’ll at least be informed if a penalty is assessed to your site.

Step #2 – Check SEO News Sites for Recent Updates

Of course, these notices are often only issued when Google applies a specific, known penalty to a website based on a set of defined criteria. But what happens when it’s simply changes to the search engine ranking algorithms that have affected your site traffic?

Indeed, there have been plenty of cases where sites received “penalties” that weren’t really penalties at all – they were simply lost rankings due to a reprioritization of the algorithms. For example, in the case of the Panda 1.0 update, thousands of sites lost rank overnight, resulting in a significant, widespread traffic loss for many industry-leading sites. Although Panda didn’t technically qualify as a penalty, per se, the results that many webmasters experienced were similar.

To see if an algorithm change is to blame for your diminished search results, check out your favorite SEO news sites for information about potential rollouts. Often, whenever major changes are made to the search results ranking algorithms, webmasters gather together on sites like Search Engine Roundtable and Digital Point to discuss the impact of the updates.

Step #3 – Determine the Extent of the Penalty

At the same time that you’re combing your Google Webmaster Tools account and your favorite SEO news websites for information about what led to your search engine penalty, take the time to determine the extent of its impact as well.

There are a few things you’ll want to check:

Is your site still indexed? Perhaps the biggest penalty of all is to have your website removed from Google’s index entirely, though this drastic measure is typically only applied in the most serious of cases. To check whether or not your site is still indexed, enter “site:http://www.yoursite.com” (without the quotes) into Google’s search bar. If no results appear, it’s possible your site has been deindexed.

Have you recently started a new link building campaign? Often, when you start promoting your site through link building, your rankings can be caught up in what’s known as the “Google Dance.” In these cases, the search engine is attempting to reevaluate where your site should rank, so it’s not uncommon to see your natural search rankings vary wildly for a few weeks before settling down into their rightful place.

How old is your website? Though Google has never officially confirmed it, there’s a widespread acceptance throughout the SEO community of the presence of a “sand box” filter that issues a dampening effect to the rankings of young sites (typically 2-6 months old). If your website falls in this age range, it’s not uncommon to see it enter the SERPs and then fall out before it’s deemed trustworthy enough to reenter the results pages.

To what extent has your traffic or rankings changed? Are you seeing a decrease in rankings for all of your target keywords or just a few? Has your traffic declined significantly or have you only lost volume slightly? Determining the extent of your search engine penalty will tell you whether you’ve been hit with a site-wide penalty or total ban (in which case all traffic would be affected) or a smaller penalty affecting a single keyword.

One situation that’s often incorrectly regarded as a search engine penalty is the devaluation of some or all of your site’s backlinks, which would typically only affect traffic to a single keyword you’re targeting. Essentially, what happens is that your site is enjoying unnaturally high rankings as the result of poor quality backlinks. When the search engines devalue these links – as is the case with the many webmasters who lost rank after Google deindexed several of the most popular blog networks – your rankings plummet, though not as the result of a specifically applied penalty.

Step #4 – Review Your Site Against Search Engine TOS

Now, no matter what the size or scope of your search engine penalty, you’ll want to review your website and your backlinking practices against the Terms of Service (TOS) issued by the search engines.

For reference, the following are the locations of Google, Bing and Yahoo’s TOS statements:

Google Webmaster Guidelines

Bing Webmaster Tools

Yahoo Search Content Quality Guidelines

In addition, take a look at Google engineer Amit Singhal’s list 23 questions that highlight the characteristics Google is looking to reward in the SERPs. Check your site and your promotional practices against these guidelines- as well as against the search engine TOS policies listed above – and highlight any areas you believe may be bringing down your site’s rankings.

As an example, considering the following five questions, as pulled directly from Singhal’s list:

Would you trust the information presented in this article?

Is this article written by an expert or enthusiast who knows the topic well, or is it more shallow in nature?

Does the site have duplicate, overlapping, or redundant articles on the same or similar topics with slightly different keyword variations?

Would you be comfortable giving your credit card information to this site?

Does this article have spelling, stylistic, or factual errors?

Now, take a look at your website in relation to these questions, trying to be as objective as possible. Can you really say for sure that – based on your site’s external appearance and content quality – you’d be comfortable handing over financial information or labeling your articles as “expert-level content”? If not, attempt to remedy these flaws by building trust with your user and positioning yourself better as an authority figure within your industry.

Step #5 – Take Corrective Action

If you’ve highlighted any areas of weakness within your site or your chosen link building methods, rectify them as quickly as you’re able to and then follow Google’s rules for requesting a reconsideration of your site. While it may take time to introduce high quality content to your site or to delete low quality backlinks you believe may be harming your natural search results placements, this effort will pay off in the long run, as Google aims to reward sites that provide the best results for their readers.

Keep in mind, though, that what initially looks like a penalty may not – in fact – be a true penalty, and that the corrective action you may need to take in these instances is less about fixing past mistakes and more about improving your own site’s SEO according to current best practices. The SEO field is becoming more and more competitive each day, so it’s possible that the “penalty” you’re struggling to get over is actually a better educated competitor surpassing you in the rankings.

Do your best to stay on top of the latest SEO news and apply the lessons you learned to your website. Over time, you should see the results of these efforts rewarded with higher search engine results page rankings and more natural search traffic being directed to your site.

A startup called Wajam has created a more useful social search experience for Google than Google could.

Google’s own three-month-old social search product is called “Search Plus Your World.” But given the absence of Twitter and Facebook updates in the product’s results, it would be more appropriate to call it “Search Plus Your Google+.”

Wajam, which first launched its free browser extension last year, includes other social networks in search results.

The startup introduced a new interface on Monday that sets its search results to the right of Google search results. When users make a Google search query, they can filter social results by specific friends who posted status updates, photos or videos about a specific term. They can select, for instance, only photos that their friend Bob posted on Facebook or only videos Danielle posted to Twitter.

Wajam’s plugin also brings social search to Yahoo, Bing and about 30 other websites — although not all of them are search engines. On TripAdvisor, Amazon, Yelp and eBay, Wajam adds a social search bar to the top of the page for relevant recommendations.

Wajam benefits from not asking social networks for permission to crawl their data. Instead, it asks individual users for permission to access their social feeds, and those feeds are only used in their owners’ results.

Facebook does not allow Google to use its data in search results. Twitter once powered Google’s real-time search, but that relationship expired in July and was not renewed. Microsoft’s Bing has relationships with both Facebook and Twitter that allow it to incorporate some of their social data in its search results, but its solution is a far cry from personalized social results.

Wajam has company in startups such as Topsy and Bottlenose in the social search space, but it cooks itself into products people already use.

Wajam from Wajam on Vimeo.

It will be interesting to see if Twitter and Facebook appreciate this round-about journey their social data has taken to search engines. If they don’t, Wajam has a problem.

When the startup exceeds the number of calls to either company’s API, it will require a commercial agreement to continue using their data.

“Some people will look at this and wonder if they should like it or be pissed off,” Wajam CEO Martin-Luc Archambault says. “Hopefully since we’re improving the experience, we’ll make friends.”

Even major league baseball teams are getting on on the social media craze. They have understood and realized the importance of social media, and the impact it has on their fan base. Rewarding a fan base for being engaged in social media is a great way to keep fans engaged as the Indians have realized.

Recognized as one of “MLB’s most Twitter-friendly teams” by ESPN the Magazine, the Cleveland Indians have shown they are fast becoming one of the most adept teams in social media, not just in baseball — but in all sports.

Billed as “the first social media-only space in professional sports,” the Indians Social Suite provides fans the opportunity to chat about the Tribe offline with other attendees, and online with friends and followers directly from a Wi-Fi-enabled suite at Progressive Field.

The Social Suite actually started as “just a section” in 2010, but Indians president Mark Shapiro quickly realized the need for more space to allow fans to interact with their beloved Tribe via social media.

“We’re cognizant of the importance of social media as a tool to engage with fans,” said Shapiro. “We now have the opportunity to directly connect to our fans and engage in authentic, two-way conversations. These connections with fans strengthen our brand vision to create memories, connect generations and celebrate families.”

So, if you’re an Indians fan and an active social media user, this is definitely the place for you.

Just keep in mind invitations to the Indians Social Suite are distributed on a game-by-game basis.

A new service that grades how each of Facebook’s top third-party apps respects consumers’ privacy was released late Sunday by research firm PrivacyChoice. The free tool, Privacyscore for Facebook, spells out privacy policies and tracking practices of more than 200 top Facebook apps, including games, work-related programs and sharing apps.

‘Angry Birds’ is one of the most popular games on the Web, but it doesn’t rank well in a new privacy study.

Facebook‘s pervasive Web presence comes with “a responsibility to hold people who are developing apps on their platform accountable for the (privacy) assertions that they’re making,” says Craig Spiezle, executive director of the Online Trust Alliance.

Facebook’s David Swain noted that the company requires app developers to agree to its privacy policies. “If we find an app has violated our policies … we take action,” Swain says.

According to PrivacyChoice, 140 different tracking entities routinely collect information about users of the top Facebook apps. Trackers can correlate that data to profiles of individuals’ browsing behavior across multiple Web pages in order to deliver more relevant ads. “It’s up to users to know the privacy risk of sharing personal data with apps,” says Jim Brock, PrivacyChoice founder and CEO.

Privacyscore’s top score is 100. Deductions are made for sharing data with an excessive number of tracking entities, failing to honor deletion requests, failing to provide an opt-out choice or storing consumer data for long periods.

Gamemaker Zynga, for instance, registers an overall score of 82 for 17 Facebook games. The game Slingo, with 17 million players, scores 80, losing points partly because it connects to 59 trackers. Zynga general counsel Reggie Davis says Zynga welcomes tools such as Privacyscore. And Zynga’s online tutorial, PrivacyVille, rewards its users for learning more about the company’s privacy policies.

Scoring privacy

Most-used Facebook apps and how well they protect users privacy:

App name, privacy score

CityVille, 76*

Texas HoldEm Poker, 87

MyCalendar, 80

Hidden Chronicles,79

FarmVille, 82

CastleVille, 76

Angry Birds, 65

Bubble Witch Saga, 92

Words With Friends, 79

Diamond Dash, 79

* 90 -100, most protective; 80 – 89, use with caution; 70 and below, least protective.

Imagine a world without light bulbs. Sure, in this world we would likely have enough light in the day to get by, and we’d be able to use candlelight for our daily activities once the sunlight started to fade into the night. But while this style of living worked perfectly fine for years, the invention of electricity has truly revolutionized our world and allowed us to evolve to bigger and better things. Then why are so many digital marketers still using advertising methods dating back to the internet’s inception? Just like light has evolved from candlestick to electric, the internet is also evolving and, as such, advertising and monetization methods must evolve too.

But before jumping into something new, it’s important to think about what solutions are appropriate for your needs and how to get the most out of your marketing efforts. A solution that is growing in popularity and generally a good fit for most digital marketers is the affiliate marketing avenue called cost-per-action (CPA). Using this method, a website visitor in search of premium content is presented with a brief survey, quiz, or game they must complete that then unlocks their desired content. Digital marketers have the opportunity to sponsor these surveys or games and then pay a small amount to the website publisher for each one that is completed.

This type of marketing effort has four distinct benefits for digital marketers:

Targeted advertisements

With a CPA approach, digital marketers are able to target any specific niche, several niches, or geographical zones with pinpoint precision. Whether your campaign is national or regional, this type of marketing can garner extreme accuracy in your targeting efforts. To boot, because of the global reach of the internet, whether your business is focused in North America, Europe, Asia, or anywhere else around the world, CPA can push your campaign in any market globally. For example, if you’re marketing tennis shoes and you’d like to reach men ages 15 to 22 in both Europe and the United States, CPA would allow you the precision targeting to make sure your product reaches the right eyeballs and isn’t being pushed to 75-year-old women in France, for instance.

More leads

CPA allows you to effectively garner leads by collecting information about those who complete your survey, quiz, or game. You can then move toward more targeted outreach with a better understanding of this consumer base by using the information you collected, such as their likes, dislikes, age, gender, etc. This can all be used to better target existing customers as well as those in future campaigns, build your sales base, gain detailed insight into what’s working versus what’s not working, and ultimately increase sales.

Partnerships with top web publishers

CPA also allows you to partner with very targeted web publishers whose readership base is likely the most interested in your product or service. This is another way to enhance targeted advertisements, as each site you’re featured on presents only the most relevant offers in exchange for users’ attention. Additionally, your brand’s name will be top of mind for visitors who frequent those sites.

Results

With affiliate marketing, and in particular CPA, the marketer defines the terms. This essentially means that if a user does not interact with your advertisement as required, then there will be no cost to you — you have the choice to only pay the web publisher for completed interactions. This guarantees that you will be receiving full value on your investment.

In short, with a CPA method, digital marketers can not only meet the needs and desires of their consumer base, but also evolve their methods to coincide with the changing landscape of the internet — bringing innovation and profit to their business models and taking them out of the dark ages of digital marketing techniques. They will enjoy enhanced targeting, strategic partnerships, gain valuable leads, and ultimately increase the bottom line.

Affiliate marketing has been a large part of my income over the last several years and also one of the main reasons i got involved in marketing online. When you leverage affiliate marketing properly it enables you to increase your income streams by as many different products that you are willing to promote. Most people (including myself) prefer to do our own product launches, however without having a quality list or quality partners it can be very difficult to have optimal success. After doing affiliate marketing for a lengthy enough time it will enable to establish quality relationships. When you have a bunch of affiliate sales for a person/product launch people will begin to recognize you as a quality partner and be more likely to return the favor when it comes time to do your own product launch. If you’re looking for a place to start out online, affiliate marketing is defiantly a good place.

Internal linking also promotes healthy link equity flow throughout a site, allows you to strategically channel link juice to target landing pages, lifts deep pages higher up in the site structure, and improves usability and overall crawlability making it easier for users and engines to find your content. It’s also far easier to structure your desired anchor text and secure priority on-page placement for internal versus inbound links.

When you start working with a new client, one of the first things that will move the needle is to develop and implement an internal linking strategy. Here are nine tactics to get you started.

1. Tap the Most Linked-to Pages

For a new internal linking strategy, start by going to Open Site Explorer. Grab a list of the most linked to (and most authoritative) pages on a client site and drop links on those pages to my “SEO landing pages,” (i.e., pages you’re targeting specifically for organic traffic). Theoretically those pages are the biggest reservoirs of link equity, and your goal is to harness and effectively distribute the flow of link juice.

2. Interlink All Your Target SEO Landing Pages

It’s a good idea to scale your link building efforts as much as possible. Interlinking all the target SEO landing pages on a website is a great way to scale because each time you build an inbound link to one SEO landing page, that link equity subsequently flows to your other SEO landing pages, thereby multiplying your efforts. The easiest way to interlink SEO landing pages is to add a list of “related links” at the end of a page or in a sidebar.

3. Drop Links on the Home Page

The home page is often the most linked to page on a website, so it should be a prime target for tapping equity. Also, anything linked to internally from the home page sends a pretty strong trust and authority signal to the engines that your organization places high value on those pages.

Politics within companies can make adding a home page link impossible at times. But if you run into resistance, you can often sell the concept by suggesting the links live below the fold in a discreet “resources” or “top searches” sidebar content block. Granted, that’s not as strong a signal as above the fold, but sometimes you have to take what you can get.

4. Drop Links on Pages Higher in the Information Architecture

Pages that are high in the information architecture (IA) may or may not be the most linked to pages on a site, but they’re only a click away from the home page. This means that a higher percentage of the link equity from the home page flows to these pages. What’s more, adding links here helps move deeper pages of content higher up the IA ladder.

5. Look for Unconventional Places to Grab Links

Some of the best pages to tap for link equity are pages “off the beaten path,” like company leaders, privacy policy, terms of service, contact us, etc. Unless a client is opposed to including internal links on these pages (and, yes, you should be very transparent with a client and don’t do anything link-wise until you get the green light), these pages are great because not only are they high in the architecture but they’re often free of other links, meaning you aren’t competing with a dozen other internal or external links for a page’s cache of link juice

After its growth slowed in March, it looks like photo-sharing/collecting site Pinterest is actually losing users in April.

Most Pinterest users sign-up to the site using their Facebook accounts, and AppData, which monitors how often users of third-party apps and Web sites interact with Facebook, says the number of Facebook-connected Pinterest users has declined precipitously the past 50 days.

Monthly active users are down from 11.3 million on March 1 to 11.15 million on April 1 to just 8.3 million today.

Here’s a chart showing the 3/21 to 4/20 portion of this 25% decline:

That chart probably isn’t as scary as it looks for Pinterest. The first three months of this year saw an explosion in coverage of Pinterest, according to Google Trends:

That coverage likely motivated a lot of early adopter types to try Pinterest during February and March. Many of those people seem to have decided the site is not for them.

The good news for Pinterest is that the reason the site started getting so much coverage at the beginning of this year was that it had become incredibly popular, very fast without much coverage from the media or buzz from early adopters.

The story of how I first heard of Pinterest is a common one. My wife, a nurse, started using it after her mother, from Florida, told her about it.

Our guess: Pinterest will continue shedding early adopters and then start growing again, the way it used to: through word-of-mouth.

Mobile devices are accessing the internet now more than ever, and savvy marketers are closely watching and optimizing their mobile audiences. It’s helpful to break out this data to see the conversion rate per device so problems or optimization opportunities can be identified. This tutorial will show you how to setup a custom dashboard to analyze your mobile audience:

Create a New Dashboard in the new version of Google Analytics

Add widgets according to what datapoints you want to see, for ours we did:

Visits

Goal Completions

Bounce Rate

Pie Graph of Visits grouped by Visitor Type (New vs Returning)

Timeline of Visits compared with Pageviews

Table with Mobile Device Model, Visits and Goal Conversion Rate

Pie graph with Visits grouped by Medium

Table with Screen Resolution, Visits, and Goal Conversion Rate

Now comes the tricky part. We are going to add a filter to all these widgets with the following to only show mobile traffic:

Only Show: Mobile

Exactly Matching: Yes

Here are some really useful tools, some of which you will use every day, if you aren’t already. Exercise some critical judgement though: a tool is only as good as it’s data – so take a moment to check if the data is believable, and to think about other sources you can cross reference against.

Search Engine, Browser and Device Stats

I’ve written before about sources of this data but the one tool I come back to again and again is StatsCounter – there’s data on the market shares of search engines, browser versions, computer, and mobile hardware and operating systems here for most countries. Whilst it’s always sensible to compare two sources of this data, this is always where I start.

Google Insights and Trends

It always seems confusing that there are two Google tools showing search trends – Insights and Trends with the later linking to the other with the text; “Explore advanced features with Google Insights for Search”. I keep expecting Trends to be closed down, but it soldiers on.

Both offer a quick way to view search trends over time by country run comparisons. Trends will also show data for 5 URLs, if they have received enough traffic to register. As well as analysing seasonality, they can be used to look at cause and effect (e.g., recession and unemployment searches rising as concerns about the economy grew in 2008 in the UK, prompting an increase in insomnia searches).

Google Ad Planner

AdPlanner show visitor levels and demographic data for sites drawn from visits to them using data from Google’s own servers, a partnership with Comscore and XYZ. It’s perfect for profiling individual sites or, when planning a display campaign, drilling down by country, age group, interest etc. and finding a list of sites that fit your target audiences – and then filtering down to those that are in the Google Display Network and can be targeted using AdWords. It’s a useful tool for benchmarking against competitors, too.

Google Keyword Tools

Everybody should already know this one – it’s the pre-eminent source of keyword data. Data can be viewed at a national level, with mobile search volumes split off separately. Login for the ability to download to CSV, or to add them directly to AdWords.

Less well known are the Placement and Contextual tools available from this URL. The placement tool will, based on keywords, URLs, a category or combination of these, suggest sites within the Google Display Network to place ads on. The contextual tool will, based on the keywords you input, suggest further keywords to add to GDN campaigns.

Yandex and Baidu Keyword Tools

Remember the power of Yandex and Badiu in Russia and China, with 63 and 78 percent market share respectively. Yandex’s keyword tool covers Russia, the rest of the CIS and international traffic, showing the keywords you enter and related keywords with “Display” volumes.

Baidu has a keyword tool that only PPC advertisers can access, but they also offer an open trends and keyword tool called Baidu Index and there’s a good explanation of it in English, and a list of other Chinese tools on the Chinese SEOShifu blog.

SEOBook Keyword Tools

A Swiss Army Knife of free keyword tools – one to clean up keyword lists copied off webpages or from other sources by removing numbers, punctuation and words you don’t want (e.g. “free”); another tool to generate all the variations of two lists of words and one to generatetypos/misspellings of keywords.

Microsoft Advertising Intelligence for Excel

A free Excel Plugin that brings in keyword data including volumes, additional keywords and other data from MSN AdCentre.

Ubersuggest

Find more keywords using Google Autocomplete and other sources. It’s a quick way of understanding the universe of searches around word or phrase to find negative or positive keywords.

Google Preview Tool

Is that ad running OK in Slovakia? Who’s bidding on your brand on mobiles in Mexico? The Google Ad Preview tool allows you to view PPC and SEO results as if located in a specific country on a fresh computer with no cookie or login based personalisation. Essential for checking campaigns are live, reviewing competitor copy and the search landscapes outside your current location. It offers the ability to view ads based on a local area too, by entering a town or region.

YouTube Keyword Tool

YouTube is the dominant video search engine – and evolving as a fully-fledged entertainment hub with the obvious short-form video uploads alongside professional content from broadcasters and brands. Advertising opportunities here are detailed on their own micro site and Promoted Videos are shown next to video search results and managed through AdWords. The keyword tool will let you see what volume of searches are being made for specified keywords each month.

Visit Search Engine Watch to see the rest of the list.
